First, marriage predates religion. Second, the churches don't want separation of state and marriage, it was the Reformationist who insisted the two be merged in order to weaken the Catholic Church. Third, if you did separate it the battle continue because the fundamentalists:

a. want the state to forbid liberal churches from performing marriages for gay couples and
b. demand that the state NOT grant any legal rights to gay couples.

The culture war exists here because the Religious Right demands that the state impose their morality on others. Privatizing marriage won't remove that demand from their agenda. Unfortunately, however, the political will for such a change is almost certainly absent. I suggest that the An-Cap solution and your much more practical solution are similarly far from becoming a reality.

In the meantime, however, liberty-minded individuals should support efforts to expand liberties where they are unduly withheld. One such area is marriage equality. Several constitutional arguments provide a non-statist, presumably founding father approved, rationale for expanding marriage rights to same-sex couples.

I hope that in the short-term, marriage equality will be extended to same-sex couples, but the optimal long-term solution is to remove the religious connotation of marriage from consideration with respect to legal rights, obligations, and privileges.Greg Wnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6083572548028483665.post-20228124571258626102010-09-01T16:07:08.067-04:002010-09-01T16:07:08.067-04:00Noted and Linked.Noted and Linked.tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14230665595988628546noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6083572548028483665.post-9197373866193288222010-08-25T19:57:11.703-04:002010-08-25T19:57:11.703-04:00Oddly, I just finished reading 1984 for the first ...Oddly, I just finished reading 1984 for the first time last night. Was MLK wrong for advocating equality between races? Were the founding fathers wrong for advocating decentralization of control from the Crown? These are BIG social changes that have consequences and your argument is that "change from status quo = bad" I don't buy that without some explanation of how you differentiate good policy from bad.

I'll believe that they come to "reclaim" when I see a bollot measure for AZ, NM, TX, NV, and Southern CA to leave the US and join Mexico.

The economics are what is being argued for the most part and I've answered that. If you want to talk about the social changes then you're free to do so, but keep in mind that my arguments still stand, and if you want to make one, it will not be one based on data but rather one based on opinion.The_Chefhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05544443854634465201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6083572548028483665.post-13196835214767104482010-07-30T18:42:01.017-04:002010-07-30T18:42:01.017-04:00Cook County stole a really nice self-built custom ...Cook County stole a really nice self-built custom from me way back when (when it was a misdemeanor, even) because I was "transporting it improperly" and I had to forfeit it as part of a plea.

Think if I'd been drunk and had a badge I'd have been OK?
